A live marketplace queries current availability when the page loads and shows a timestamp beside the count. A static list is a page somebody typed and forgot. The difference matters more in empty legs than in almost any other travel category, because the inventory genuinely expires.

Broker alerts: the other half of the job

Searching only finds what exists right now. Alerts find what appears while you are working. If your route is specific — say London to Nice in the second week of the month — registering the route with a broker means the match is made when the sector is published, not when you next remember to look.

A good alert captures route, date window, passenger count and aircraft preference. A weak alert captures an email address and sends everybody the same list.

Flexibility is the real search filter

Empty legs are created by other people's charters. The more rigid your requirements, the smaller the pool. Three levers widen it dramatically without changing your trip in any meaningful way.

• —Date window: searching a three-day span rather than one date typically multiplies matches.
• —Nearby airports: London alone has Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill, Stansted and Northolt within the same catchment.
• —Aircraft category: accepting an adjacent category — a super-midsize instead of a midsize — opens more sectors than any other single change.
• —Direction: many sectors are only available one way, so treat outbound and return as separate searches.

How to search efficiently

Start broad and narrow afterwards. Filter by departure country or city group first, scan what exists, then tighten to specific airports and dates. Filtering hard on the first pass hides sectors that would have suited you from a field twenty minutes away.

Timing and confirmation

Once you identify a sector, speed matters. The enquiry goes to the operator, who re-confirms that the repositioning is still planned, still available and still priced as published. Until that confirmation, a listing is an opportunity, not a reservation.
